The preeminent point in understanding Jesus as a High Priest after the Order of Melchizedek is that He is a High Priest forever. Jesus’ permanence in this position is the benefit to Christians. Due to the role of the High Priest that He leads us into righteousness and takes away our sin the fact that Jesus is forever our High Priest means He is the One whom we will constantly come to as our High Priest so He can perform those two functions all of our lives.
The other details of the discussion of Melchizedek help us understand the details and superiority of the Order of Melchizedek and therefore why it is good for Jesus to be from that Order vs. the Order of Aaron.
Let’s look at a couple of these details:
1] Genesis 14:7-9
Then after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. 19 He blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” He gave him a tenth of all.
This passage establishes Melchizedek as superior to Abram since Melchizedek offered bread and wine to Abram. In essence this is the first ‘Lord’s Supper’ and Melchizedek as High Priest offered the sacraments to Abram. Abram’s response was to tithe meaning he acknowledged Melchizedek’s position as High Priest and as superior to himself.
2] Psalm 110:4
The Lord has sworn and will not change His mind,
“You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”
Obviously the Lord appointed His Son Jesus Christ as High Priest. Certainly the pronouncement of the Lord is everlasting and no one is able to reverse or override His position. Again, this is language of the certainty of Jesus as High Priest forever.
3] Hebrews 7:12
For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also.
The Order of Melchizedek signifies the end of the Law of Moses, the Priesthood of Aaron, the sacrifices of animals to atone for sin and the earthly Temple..
It’s replacement is with the Law of Christ where He is the High Priest, He atones for our sins and the establishment of the heavenly Temple as our rightful place of worship.
Now, in conclusion, the Order of Melchizedek signifies the permanence of the High Priesthood of Jesus Christ and therefore the salvation He offers as the only way. This ultimately provides mankind with the confidence to trust Him and therefore continually come to Him.
This verse summarizes the Christian goal of trusting Jesus Christ as our High Priest:
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.”
