What is the High Priest’s job? To lead the people into righteousness and take away our sin. Hence Jesus taught the way of eternal righteousness and He died on the cross and was raised from the dead to atone for our sin. Since He is the eternal High Priest, meaning there is not another one to come, He constantly teaches the way of righteousness and atones for our sin.
Thus we come to the Scriptures to receive the eternal Word or instruction from the Lord Jesus. The Word has this effect on us as Peter says in 1 Peter 1:23 – 25, “for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. For,
“All flesh is like grass,
And all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
And the flower falls off,
But the word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the word which was preached to you.”
The Word brings us life and the Word last forever.
Then as John says in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
So our job as Christians is to study the living Word daily to receive instruction and wisdom from our High Priest and when we sin we are able to confess our sins to the Lord and He will forgive us. Thus Jesus operates in our life as the faithful and eternal High Priest.
