Jesus’ healings point to the Cross

In Luke 5:24 Jesus tells His listeners, and us, why He is healing everyone: “But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.”

It’s that simple: Jesus heals so that the people will believe He can forgive their sins. While the people are healed in the moment, which is significant for them, His purpose is for them and everyone to know that He is able to forgive their sins.

Often scripture is very direct and straightforward and this is one of those instances.

Jesus can be depicted as a miracle worker or magician who possesses power for the sake of bestowing that power on those who come to Him but, like many things He does, there is a greater purpose to His work and in this case the greater work is the forgiveness of their sins.
