The Word and the subsequent work of the Spirit brings to life the Church therefore the work of the Word and the Spirit are preeminent to its existence.
Therefore how does the Word and Spirit come into the world of men, (Psalm 2:8) to bring forth the Church? As is seen in Acts 6:4 the ministry of the Word and prayer is ascribed to men who then preach and teach the Word in the midst of men.
In Ephesians 4 you see the ‘gifts of grace’ given to men who bring forth the Word into the world of men from which the church comes.
Let’s read how the Apostle Paul describes this situation:
Ephesians 4:7-8, 11-13
7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it says,
“When He ascended on high,
He led captive a host of captives,
And He gave gifts to men.”
11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.”
Thus there are five roles that are given to men in the church to bring forth a mature unity of the faith and a knowledge of the Son of God.
Therefore through the work of these five roles:
Ephesians 4: 14-15: As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.”
From these five roles comes this result: the church is not deceived by the lies of the world but it grows up into a mature well functioning body of believers.
Thus the Lord designed the work of the evangelist as a gift of His grace to bring forth the maturing and functioning of His body.
