Themes: keep the Commandments so that you may be fruitful and multiply and possess the promised land. In keeping the Commandments you learn that man does not lie by bread alone but by ‘everything that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord’. If you don’t keep the commandments you will perish.
Verses 1 – 4: Keep the Commandments. The Lord tried Israel in the desert for 40 years as a father disciplines his son that Israel would know that they are to live according to the Word of the Lord.
Verses 5 – 6: The evidence of the Lord’s care for Israel and His demonstration that they could trust His Word: their clothing did not wear out, their feet did not swell.
Verses 7 – 9: Now the Lord is bringing Israel into a good land instead of the desert. A land of brooks of water, wheat and barley, figs and pomegranates, olive oil and honey; a land where there will be no scarcity where you can find iron and copper.
Verses 10 – 18: Once you prosper don’t think that it was your strength who made you prosper and therefore not keep the Commandments of the Lord.
Verses 19 – 20: If Israel does not keep the Commandments of the Lord they will perish.
