Deuteronomy 6

Themes: You were once a slave in Egypt and the Lord your God brought you out to take you into the Promised Land; therefore obey the Lord your God so that you can live long in the land the Lord is giving you.

These verses correlate directly to our Christian life: Jesus led us out of the land of slavery into His Promised Land.  If we want to enter that Land, which is what we call heaven, then we will keep His Commandments and teach them to our children so it will go well with us on the earth and then in heaven. If we do not keep His commandments then He will thrust us out and we will not inherit the Promised Land.

Verses 1-3: Moses is teaching Israel the Commandments so they may inhabit the Promised Land. They are told to obey so that their sons and grandsons may dwell in the land and that they will continue to multiply greatly and live long in the Promised Land flowing with milk and honey.

Verses 4-8: You shall teach the Commandments, which is the Lord our God is One – love Him with your heart, soul mind and strength – to your sons when you sit in your house, walk in the way, when you lie down and when you rise up.  Bind them on your hands, forehead, your doorposts and your gates so that you will always be teaching the ways of the Lord.

Verses 9-12: If you will do this then when you enter the Promised Land and receive cities you did not build, vineyards you did not plant and cisterns you did not dig you will remember to watch yourself and not forget the Lord who brought you out of Egypt.

Verses 13-16 :You shall fear the Lord only and worship no other gods of the people in the land.  The Lord is a jealous God and He will become angry and wipe you off the face of the earth. You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.

Verses 17-25: There you shall keep the Commandments of the Lord so that you can enter and possess the land. The Commandments tell us that the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, the Lord showed His might and power in Egypt and has now brought us into the Promised Land. Therefore we will keep the Commandments of the Lord and fear Him only. This obedience will be counted as righteousness so that we can remain in the Promised Land and therefore acknowledging the Lord is God.
