What is the goal of the life and work of Jesus of Nazareth? It’s direct: reconcile us to God. Why? So we can know Him and as a result of that knowing we will “love Him with our heart, soul, mind and strength’ and to demonstrate the nature of God to our neighbor ‘love our neighbors as ourself’.
Jesus calls this knowing ‘eternal life’ in John 17:3. When eternal life is mentioned in the Scriptures it is referring to this knowing. For instance God’s promise to Abram that his descendants would inherit the ‘promised land’ was so they would live where God would place His name in His favorite location.
In other words Israel would receive their ‘eternal life’ in the promised land because God would dwell there with them.
In like manner God dwells with those who believe in our day through His Spirit or the Spirit of Promise. Through the presence of the Spirit with us we come to know God and therefore receive this ‘eternal life’.
Do you want to know God? Do you want Him to dwell with you now? Then repent from your unbelief which has led you to not know God and in faith call upon the Lord Jesus Christ right now to receive His Spirit and enter into ‘eternal life’.
